Attic

This installation re-visits the 2001 site-specific Attic Project; drawings executed on the interior attic walls of a rented house. Attic is comprised of 20 photographic panels depicting four interior attic gable wall drawings, two inspiration images, and a human scale tower containing a miniature of the attic interior. Also, prominent in the installation, is a quote from Gaston Bachelard’s book The Poetics of Space which guides the viewer into the poetic imagery that inspired the original project.

Monochrome sketch of cherubs with draped figures on either side, showcasing classical architectural elements.

“Attic is a metaphorical space, signifying journey, shelter, and memory. Beyond Bachelard’s poetic investigations, it was inspired by a Baroque architectural detail from an 18th-century painting by Gian Paulo Panini. Charlton’s primary drawings of two atlas figures flanking a pair of cherubs derived from this painting. He drew this image on the four cardinal-direction gable walls. Making each progressive drawing more complete. He also included other ‘art treasures’, referencing the Pantheon, Medici Chapel, Paris Catacombs, and Pompeii.”
